The 2000 Neo Genesis Lugia #9 in First Edition is the Charizard of its era: the first English holo of a legendary from the second generation, notoriously hard to find centered, and for years the most expensive non-Base Set English card there was. On Monday, August 31, a PSA 10 copy sold on Fanatics Collect for $360,000 including buyer's premium, after 25 bids.
Ten weeks, 75 percent
The prior public sale of the same card in the same grade was $205,794 on Alt in June. Two sales ten weeks apart, same grader, same grade, and the second is 75 percent higher. Nothing about the card changed. What changed is the market around it: between the two sales the Illustrator BGS 8.5 cleared a million, the Snap starters cleared $500,000 each, five Gold Star lots went for $369,000 in one auction, and on Sunday a Rayquaza Gold Star became the first English card past $1 million. Every one of those results is a comp for the buyer who paid $360,000 on Monday.
Why Lugia, why now
The First Edition Lugia has one of the smallest PSA 10 populations of any major English holo from before 2003, because Neo Genesis was cut badly and the dark border shows every edge chip. It sat below the EX-era Gold Stars in the price order for most of this year. Once the Gold Stars re-marked in August, the Lugia was the obvious card to go next: a lower population, a bigger name, and a prior sale that suddenly looked cheap. Expect the Neo Revelation and Aquapolis Lugias, and the Neo Genesis First Edition Typhlosion, to be the next cards the market looks at.
What it does to the Index
Neo Genesis had read flat in our vintage basket for four straight weeks. This week it read +2.4 percent, and the basket as a whole posted +0.7 percent, its largest reading in seven. That is the top of a set re-pricing the ten cards below it, which is how these moves propagate.
