The Index is a proprietary model built by Rip Station, which publishes The Pack Report. Method, full history and the trend chart.

This reading is August 17 against August 10.

  • Vintage basket: +0.2% (median of 113 cards; 52 up, 33 flat, 28 down)
  • Modern basket: 0.0% (median of 111 cards; 33 up, 37 flat, 41 down)

How the index is built

Each basket takes twelve active sets and, within each, the ten most-traded cards. Vintage means 1999 to 2007 plus the promo series; modern means 2016 onward. Every card is priced by Rip Station's own engine from public comps, separately for every grader-and-grade lane. A card's weekly change is the average across its lanes; a set's reading is the median of its cards; the basket headline is the median of all cards. A flat reading means "no news," not "no demand."

Reading the week

Two flat weeks in a row is August. The vintage lean is unchanged: EX Unseen Forces led at +4.0%, Skyridge and Neo Genesis added 1.3% each, Team Rocket and Neo Destiny edged up, Base Set slipped 0.8%. Modern is split between sets that did not re-mark at all (Generations, Fates Collide, BREAKpoint, Shining Legends) and the current printings drifting lower: Crown Zenith -1.3%, Classic Collection -1.3%, Evolutions -0.6%.

Movers

Small lanes again: a PSA 3 Dark Dragonite (Team Rocket) re-marked from $120 to $248, a PSA 9 Dark Tyranitar (Team Rocket Returns) from $91 to $125, a PSA 8 Magby (Expedition) from $200 to $265. Down: a CGC 9.5 Base Set Raichu from $350 to $176 on one comp, and a CGC 10 Pristine Cynthia's Spiritomb (Ascended Heroes) from $161 to $76, the kind of modern-chase deflation that shows up first in the slab lanes nobody watches.

The seven-figure sales in this issue's lead sit entirely outside the index, which is deliberate: the baskets are built from the cards that actually trade every week, and no card in either basket is priced above $40,000.
