The Index is a proprietary model built by Rip Station, which publishes The Pack Report. Method, full history and the trend chart.

The Pack Report Index tracks two baskets of graded Pokemon cards and compares every card's price, grade by grade, with the same day a week earlier. This reading is August 13 against August 6.

  • Vintage basket: +0.1% (median of 113 cards; 47 up, 41 flat, 25 down)
  • Modern basket: -0.1% (median of 111 cards; 30 up, 32 flat, 49 down)

How the index is built

Each basket takes twelve active sets and, within each, the ten most-traded cards. Vintage means 1999 to 2007 plus the promo series; modern means 2016 onward. Every card is priced by Rip Station's own engine from public comps, separately for every grader-and-grade lane. A card's weekly change is the average across its lanes; a set's reading is the median of its cards; the basket headline is the median of all cards. Medians, because lanes with no new comps carry forward unchanged and a single comp can throw a lane 100% or more. A flat reading means "no news," not "no demand."

Reading the week

Flat weeks are information too. More than a third of the cards in both baskets did not re-mark, which is what the second week of August looks like every year: sellers on holiday, buyers waiting for the Worlds-week product wave. The lean inside the flatness is the same one we have seen all summer. The EX era keeps edging up (Team Rocket Returns +4.0%, Holon Phantoms +1.7%), Team Rocket added 2.2%, Neo Genesis gave back 1.8%. On the modern side the sets still in print drifted lower, Ascended Heroes, 151 and Celebrations all down 1.6 to 1.7%, while ten-year-old BREAKpoint was the one modern set to gain.

Movers

With so few re-marks, the movers this week are small-dollar lanes and should be read that way: a PSA 6 Rayquaza δ (Holon Phantoms) re-marked from $355 to $900 on new comps, a PSA 3 Dark Raichu from $40 to $91, and a PSA 5 Lugia ex from $41 to $81. Down: a PSA 7 Deoxys (EX Deoxys) from $236 to $106, and the PSA 9 Poncho-wearing Pikachu from $8,350 to $7,400, the only four-figure move either way.
