What a flat reading is
The basket headline is the median card's weekly change. This week the median card did not move: 50 cards were up, 46 were unchanged, 20 were down, and the one in the middle sat at zero. That is a different thing from a down week. Breadth was still positive (fifty up against twenty down), three sets were up more than 2 percent, and nothing reversed. What changed is that Team Rocket Returns, which carried Monday's record reading with +6.7 percent on the Torchic, read flat as that re-mark settled into the comps, and no other set jumped to replace it.
Why this is the normal shape
Repricings move in steps. A headline sale re-marks the ten cards around it inside a week; then nothing happens in that set for a while because the new comps are already in the price. The basket keeps rising only if a different set is re-marking in the same week, and this week none of the big auctions fed through. Three days after the largest reading in the series, a flat week is what digestion looks like.
What would make it a top
Two things. A negative reading led by the EX sets, which have carried the whole move, would mean the Gold Star re-marks are being reversed rather than digested. Or two consecutive flat weeks in which breadth collapses, say thirty up and forty down, would mean the bid has gone. Neither has happened. We would still call a reading over 1 percent a rally and a negative one the end of the bid; this week is neither.
