The Index is a proprietary model built by Rip Station, which publishes The Pack Report. Method, full history and the trend chart.

This reading is September 21 against September 14.

  • Vintage basket: 0.0% (median of 116 cards; 9 up, 105 flat, 2 down)
  • Modern basket: 0.0% (median of 112 cards; 8 up, 93 flat, 11 down)

How the index is built

Each basket takes twelve active sets and, within each, the ten most-traded cards. Vintage means 1999 to 2007 plus the promo series; modern means 2016 onward. Every card is priced by Rip Station's own engine from public comps, separately for every grader-and-grade lane. A card's weekly change is the average across its lanes; a set's reading is the median of its cards; the basket headline is the median of all cards. A flat reading means "no news," not "no demand."

Reading the week

This is the first reading in which the flat headline means what it says: almost nothing re-marked. In a normal week 50 to 60 vintage cards move; this week nine did. The engine re-marks a lane when a new public comp lands in it, and over a launch weekend in which the hobby's attention and its auction calendar were on 30th Celebration and the Heritage and Goldin sales, very few of the 116 vintage cards in our basket traded publicly. The one line that would have moved, Legendary Collection, did not: the $575,000 reverse Charizard is a PSA 10 lane the basket does not weight heavily, and it had not registered by this morning.

What to expect: the re-marks from last week's $11.3 million, and from the Torchic and Charizard results before it, arrive over the next two readings. Vintage is up about 4.2 percent since August 13 after ten positive readings and two flat; we would be surprised if Thursday's reading were flat again.

Movers

Up: the PSA 9 Expedition Pichu from $2,125 to $2,938; a BGS 9 Neo Genesis Slowking from $254 to $320; a CGC 8.5 Team Rocket Returns Dark Dragonite from $550 to $650; a CGC 10 151 Ivysaur from $36 to $70. Down: a BGS 7.5 Team Rocket Dark Charizard from $145 to $84, a PSA 6 Base Set Charizard from $560 to $494, and a PSA 7 Shining Legends Shining Arceus from $50 to $26.
