The Index is a proprietary model built by Rip Station, which publishes The Pack Report. Method, full history and the trend chart.

This reading is September 17 against September 10.

  • Vintage basket: 0.0% (median of 116 cards; 50 up, 46 flat, 20 down)
  • Modern basket: 0.0% (median of 112 cards; 29 up, 46 flat, 37 down)

How the index is built

Each basket takes twelve active sets and, within each, the ten most-traded cards. Vintage means 1999 to 2007 plus the promo series; modern means 2016 onward. Every card is priced by Rip Station's own engine from public comps, separately for every grader-and-grade lane. A card's weekly change is the average across its lanes; a set's reading is the median of its cards; the basket headline is the median of all cards. A flat reading means "no news," not "no demand."

Reading the week

Vintage paused. After ten positive readings and Monday's record +0.9 percent, the median card did not move this week. Breadth stayed positive (fifty up, twenty down) and three sets were still up more than 2 percent, but Team Rocket Returns, which carried Monday with the Torchic re-mark, read flat as those comps settled, and no auction landed on another set to take its place. Chart of the Day has the full eleven-reading history and what would change our mind. The one vintage line that fell was the Japanese XY-P promos, down 1.0 percent on the PSA 10 Pikachu that re-marked from $32,188 to $20,001 last week.

Modern was flat for the eleventh reading in eleven, and the day-of-launch picture was the one we expected: Ascended Heroes fell for the eleventh straight time, 2.7 percent, and the two 2021 anniversary sets, Celebrations and its Classic Collection, dropped 1.1 and 2.0 percent as 30th Celebration replaced them. Nothing modern rose more than 0.4 percent. The 30th Celebration cards themselves are not in the basket; we will look at adding the set once it has a month of comps.

Movers

Up: a PSA 10 Holon Phantoms Mewtwo δ from $1,469 to $2,362; a PSA 7 EX Deoxys Salamence ex from $220 to $400; the CGC 10 Expedition Typhlosion ($850 to $2,000) and PSA 9 Fates Collide Lugia ($62 to $194) still inside the window. Down: a PSA 9 Team Rocket Returns Dark Houndoom from $420 to $98 on a soft comp, the XY-P Pikachu above, and the CGC 8.5 Evolutions Pikachu ($36 to $7).
