The Index is a proprietary model built by Rip Station, which publishes The Pack Report. Method, full history and the trend chart.

This reading is October 15 against October 8. Yesterday's issue measured October 14 against October 7, so the two readings share six days and should be read together, not added.

  • Vintage basket: +2.4% (median of 119 cards; 79 up, 31 flat, 9 down)
  • Modern basket: +0.1% (median of 117 cards; 50 up, 38 flat, 29 down)

How the index is built

Each basket takes twelve active sets and, within each, the ten most-traded cards. Vintage means 1999 to 2007 plus the promo series; modern means 2016 onward. Every card is priced by Rip Station's engine from public comps, separately for every grader-and-grade lane. A card's weekly change is the average across its lanes; a set's reading is the median of its cards; the basket headline is the median of all cards. The daily level, every past reading and the trend notes live on the Index page.

Reading the week

Nine cards down out of 119 is the fewest in the series outside the September pause. The EX era is still doing the work: Unseen Forces and Deoxys are the two biggest set moves for the second reading running, with Holon Phantoms third. A PSA 5 EX Deoxys Jirachi (9/107) went from $96 to $210, a single mid-grade lane we want to see confirmed by a second sale. Base Set (+0.4 percent) and Legendary Collection (flat) are still near the bottom of the table, ahead only of the XY-P promos. That fits the pattern in this issue's lead: the trophy copy of a headline card re-prices first, the rest of the set later.

On the modern side, Ascended Heroes read 0.0, the first time since the Index started in August that the set has not fallen, the September pause aside. One reading is not a turn, but it is the first hint that supply is being absorbed. Delta Reign arrives November 6 and will test that. The biggest modern drop was a PSA 10 Japanese Pokemon Card 151 Charizard ex special art rare (201/165) from $1,247 to $728 on a single lane. We treat that kind of move as a flag until a second comp confirms it.
