The Index is a proprietary model built by Rip Station, which publishes The Pack Report. Method, full history and the trend chart.

This reading is October 14 against October 7.

  • Vintage basket: +2.5% (median of 118 cards; 80 up, 24 flat, 14 down)
  • Modern basket: +0.5% (median of 118 cards; 58 up, 29 flat, 31 down)

How the index is built

Each basket takes twelve active sets and, within each, the ten most-traded cards. Vintage means 1999 to 2007 plus the promo series; modern means 2016 onward. Every card is priced by Rip Station's engine from public comps, separately for every grader-and-grade lane. A card's weekly change is the average across its lanes; a set's reading is the median of its cards; the basket headline is the median of all cards. A flat reading means "no news," not "no demand." The daily level, every past reading and the trend notes live on the Index page.

Reading the week

This is the broadest vintage week in the series: 80 cards up against 14 down, where a typical week runs 50 up and 25 down. The EX era led again, with EX Unseen Forces posting the largest single-set reading we have printed at 11.6 percent. Two of its lanes did most of the work: a PSA 9 Entei from $2,990 to $4,701 and a PSA 5 Lugia ex from $1,000 to $2,500. Neo Genesis and Expedition followed, and a PSA 8 Expedition Typhlosion doubled from $499 to $995. Base Set and Legendary Collection were flat, which is the usual pattern: the Wizards-era headline sets re-mark in steps, the EX sets drift.

Modern was positive for a second week, but the sets that moved were the 2016 ones: Fates Collide and BREAKpoint had not printed a non-zero reading in two months, and Evolutions added 5.4 percent three weeks before the Base Set reprint gets company from Delta Reign. Ascended Heroes lost 3.8 percent for the eighth time in nine readings; its tins have been on shelves since August 28, and Delta Reign is three weeks out.

Movers

Up: a PSA 10 Shining Legends Mewtwo from $453 to $1,691 on a single lane, the kind of jump we treat as a flag rather than a trend until a second comp confirms it; a PSA 10 Legendary Collection Dark Blastoise from $810 to $1,900; the Entei and Lugia ex above. Down: a BGS 9.5 Japanese Poncho-wearing Pikachu from $15,000 to $10,100, and PSA 7 Crown Zenith and CGC 9.5 Base Set Pikachus giving back a third each.
