Legendary Collection, released in 2002, was a reprint set: 110 cards from Base Set, Jungle, Fossil and Team Rocket, and for the first time in English, a reverse holo version of every card. The reverse used a fireworks-pattern foil that is beautiful and almost impossible to find clean: it scratches in the pack, it shows print lines, and the cards were cut loosely. PSA 10 reverse holos from the set are among the scarcest grades in English Pokemon.
| Card | Grade | Price | Venue | Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legendary Collection Charizard #3 reverse holo | PSA 10 | $575,000 | Heritage | September 18 |
| Legendary Collection Pikachu #86 reverse holo | PSA 10 | $780,000 | Fanatics Weekly | September 27 |
Why the common won
The Charizard has been submitted to PSA for twenty years because it is a Charizard, and its PSA 10 reverse population, while tiny, is larger than the Pikachu's, which was a common that nobody paid to grade until gem-mint set builders started chasing the reverse set. On a foil where the gem rate is this low, the card that was submitted least has the smallest 10 population, and the smallest population is what the two bidders on September 27 were paying for. We have now seen this four times in two months: the Torchic over the Charizard Gold Star, the Chansey at $238,597, the Misdreavus at $408,000, and the Pikachu over the Charizard. The market is pricing the population report first and the name on the card second.
What it does to the other 108 reverses
Every card in Legendary Collection has a reverse holo, and every reverse holo now has two six-figure comps from its set. Rip Station's engine re-marked the set +7.2 percent on October 1 and +15.0 percent this morning, the largest single-set reading since the Index began, and that is with only the ten most-traded cards in the basket. The reverse holos of the set's lesser-known holos (Dark Blastoise, Dark Dragonite, Gengar, Mewtwo) are the lanes to watch: scarce in 10, never tested at this level, and now priced off two comps that were not there a month ago.
