This issue's quiz card is the 2021 Sword & Shield Evolving Skies Sylveon VMAX #212, the alternate-art secret rare, in PSA 10, loaded in our $200 machine with a mark of $699. PSA's population report shows roughly 14,000 copies in Gem Mint. A week ago we explained why a Skyridge Nidoran reverse holo with a dozen 10s is a four-figure card. This is the other half of that lesson.
Two kinds of value
On a vintage common, the card has no value of its own and the grade has all of it, so the price is set by how few perfect copies exist. On a modern chase card the card has value of its own, because thousands of people want it, and the grade is a tier within that demand: the 10 is the liquid, clean lane, the 9 is the discount lane, raw is the lane for players. Population does not set the price in the second case; demand does. Fourteen thousand PSA 10 Sylveons are not a glut, they are a market, and $699 is what that market clears at.
Why Evolving Skies
Evolving Skies (August 2021) is the set whose alternate arts defined the modern chase: the Umbreon VMAX, the Rayquaza VMAX (two of which came out of our $25 machine two weeks ago), the Sylveon, the Glaceon, the Leafeon. They are the cards most modern collectors mean when they say "alt art," the set was printed in the middle of the 2021 shortage, and demand has not faded in five years. That is why a 10 with 14,000 siblings holds $699 while plenty of cards with populations of 500 trade for $30.
What population does tell you
Two things. First, liquidity: a 14,000-population 10 sells the day you list it, at a predictable price, which is worth something. Second, the 10 premium over the 9: when the gem rate is high and the 10 population is deep, the 9 trades at a large fraction of the 10 (about half, on this card), because buyers know a 10 is not scarce. On the Nidoran the 9 was a two-figure card against a four-figure 10. Same label, opposite ratio, and the population report is why.
What to watch
Not the population. The demand. Modern chase cards are priced by what else is competing for the same collectors' money, and this week that is 30th Celebration: thirty Pikachus, a Futuristic rare Mew ex, three secret RGB Mews. If Evolving Skies alt arts drift in the next month, it will not be because PSA graded more of them.
